Plans are already being announced for the fall season. Yahoo! Here is the one that traditionally kicks off the black-tie lineup — the Dallas Symphony Orchestra Gala. Word just arrived that the date will be Saturday, September 26. Yes, it will be at the Meyerson.

But here is the surprise: it’s not going to be chaired by a couple. Nope. It’s going to two couples! 2012 Gala Co-Chairs Jennifer and Coley Clark are returning to the helm to join Gala Co-Chairs Katherine and Key Coker. These four people exemplify formal galas to the letter. They’re gorgeous, have incredible taste and excel in being gracious. They’re also fun to be with.

As for the onstage talent, it will be Maestro Jaap van Zweden and violin virtuoso Pinchas Zukerman. What a combination they’ll make.

Tickets for the full complement of the evening’s activities (cocktail reception, dinner, concert and after party) start at $1250 per person. If your budget is really tight, then a ticket for just the concert and after party is $99.

When it comes to celebrating 50th anniversaries, Art Ball 50 Chair Nancy Carlson brought together the fashions, food and faces as if they were pieces of art. There was so much to report. Like what? Well, the bidding war between two blondes in diamonds, the late Valentino’s companion going unnoticed, the parachute like cape that reflected a Budweiser flavor, Beyonce’s kid sister’s up-and-down week, the gal whose skirt was made of curtains, the facial that one mother swears is better than a facelift and… but wait! All that and more will be in the write-up.

Dallas Museum Of Art’s Art Ball 50: Self-Portrait “Selfie-brates” Its 50th Anniversary With Fab Fashion, Faces And Funky Video

The 50th anniversary of the Dallas Museum of Art’s annual black tied fundraiser was a really big deal — Artball 50: Self-Portrait. No, the crane that fell on the DMA earlier in the week was not part of the celebration, but it certainly drew news coverage of the upcoming fundraiser on Saturday, April 11.

Forty Five Ten pop up shop

As guests arrived at the ceremonial entrance on Ross, they discovered a Forty Five Ten pop-up shop at the top of the promenade leading to the mega tent. There were the so very softy Elder Statesman Cashmere lingerie set ($1,450), a lineup of Edward Bess “Dallas Pink” lipsticks ($35), Moschino gown ($2,550) and all types of items curated by Forty Five Ten’s Brian Bolke. Alas, the Loewe Runway Shopper had already been snapped up for a cool $3,950.

Once past the boutique, the guests entered the tented reception area. Just as the place was about to bust, the curtains on the east side opened to the ballroom. Here massive lit balls floated overhead with ever-changing faces and eyes staring at the guests below.

Stage under Ave

Stage under Ave

Event planner Todd Fiscus, instead of trying to hide the massive orange “Ave” sculpture, embraced it by placing the stage for singer Kitty Carmichael and her band just under it. Against the wall through which guests had arrived was the stage for comments and the live auction.

As guests took their seats around 8:15, past DMA Chairman of the Board Walter Elcock officially welcomed the crowd, adding, “This is supposed to be fun…so, if you don’t do anything, have fun tonight!”

He was followed by DMA Eugene McDermott Director Max Anderson, who shushed the talkative crowd and thanked Gala Chair Nancy Carlson and touted impressive statistics from the past year: 700,000 total visitors to the DMA, of which 28% were Latino and 13% were African-American.

Dinner consisted of Caviar Cloche (celeriac panna cotta, slow-cooked quail egg, chive crema American sturgeon caviar and celery chips), Still Life (pan-roasted wild turbot, fava-cumin puree and cauliflower couscous, spring vegetables and tomato jam), Framed Game (Maple Leaf Farms duck confit, spring pea goat cheese ravioli, Apple-smoked bacon and charred pearl onions with Parmesan cream sauce) and Sweet Triptych (Lemon curd goat cheese mascarpone chocolate tart with Thyme-cardamom berries, Pavlova, passion fruit, basil with olive oil powder and vanilla bean fromage blanc, apricot shortbread with honey and balsamic pearls).

Unlike “Downtown Artsy,” the sponsor video of two years ago that used the Downton Abbey theme, this year’s video “Artball Funk” was upbeat, having local art lovers making fun of themselves (Max and Mayor Mike Rawlings in hair curlers, Cindy Rachofsky shining shoes, Nancy Carlson stiletto strutting, etc.). It was a clever way to stealthily promote the sponsors.

Hugh Edmeade

Hugh Edmeades

By the time that Christie’s auctioneer Hugh Edmeades took over the stage in his black velvet evening jacket, he had to use his best British “shush” to get the attention of the crowd. He found himself shushing a few more times during his part of the program. A couple of the highlights of the auction were:

  • Deedie Rose and Marguerite Hoffman

    Deedie Rose and Marguerite Hoffman

A DMA parking space for a year (Value: Priceless) — Tablemates Deedie Rose and Marguerite Hoffman got into a playful bidding war, with Deedie claiming rights for $15,000. One local attorney, upon hearing what the spot went for, commented, “For $12,000, I’ll drive you there and pick you up, anytime, anywhere.” The big question will be whether Deedie’s daughter, Lela (Rose), will decorate the space.

  • Marfa Daytrip (Value: $15,000) — When the trip for seven to Marfa went up for bid, one oldtimer sniffed, “You couldn’t pay me $10,000 to go to Marfa.” Another fella across the table responded, “You could buy Marfa for $10,000.”
  • Georgina Hartland

    Georgina Hartland

    Nancy Rogers

    Nancy Rogers

Dinner at Grange Hall for 22 (Value: $30,000) — This one resulted in a showdown of the BIDs (Blondes In Diamonds) — Nancy Rogers in diamonds and sapphires and Georgina Hartland in diamonds and aquamarines. It was the last item up for bid and both gals wanted it. The listed value was $30,000. But that number was passed early on. As the dollars rose, so did the ladies. Wielding their paddles like sabers, neither was backing down. In the meantime, heads were shifting back and forth from Nancy to Georgina, back to Nancy. At times, it appeared as if the gala had turned into a tennis tournament. Finally, when the bid hit $100,000, hairdresser Michael Flores got Hugh’s ear and whispered something that appeared to remedy the bidding war. The solution would be that each lady could have her own supper for 22 at Grange Hall for $100,000. It was a happily-ever-after ending, with Nancy and Georgina hugging each other and DMA staffers looking very, very happy.

Solange Knowles

Solange Knowles

Then the sponsor video was replayed as guests returned to the reception area, where the after-party was underway with Solange Knowles at the helm. It was rather remarkable that Solange was there at all. Just a few days before her business manager Armina Mussa had been stabbed and Solange had canceled appearances to be by her bedside. But Beyonce’s little sister had no time to rest. The next morning she headed to California to attend her mom’s wedding aboard a yacht in Newport Beach to Richard Lawson.

There was so much going on, from fashion to fun, so here is a breakdown of fashion plates and snapshots:

Fashion Plates

For fashion lovers, the Art Ball 50 is traditionally a feast of fabrics, colors and designs. But this year the clothing seemed to be on steroids. There were simply way too many to go into detail, so here’s a rundown of guests and their designers: Nancy Carlson (Versace), Nancy Rogers ( Rosie Assoulin), Dallas Snadon (Chanel), Kathleen Hutchinson (Alexander McQueen), Molly Barnes (Roberto Cavalli), Julie Hawes (Altuzarra), Melissa Bank (La Petit Robe de Chiari Boni), Sharon Young (Roland Mouret), Nikki (Angela Sanchez) and Crayton Webb (Brooks Brother white evening jacket and Turnbull & Asser bowtie), Suzanne Droese (Lanvin), Lynn McBee (Elie Saab), Pat (Libertine) and Charles McEvoy (Zegna), Claire Emanuelson (Lanvin), Catherine Rose (Rosie Assoulin), Juliette Aston (Fauto Puglisi), Anne (Monique Lhuillier) and Steve Stodghill (Haleigh’s tuxedo and Jimmy Choo shoes), Brian Bolke (Givenchy), Selwyn Rayzor (Balenciaga), Jennifer (Tom Ford) and Tom Karol (Dior), Jeri Kleiman (Michael Faircloth), Amanda Johnson (Badgley Mischka), Georgina Hartland (Dennis Basso Couture), Nasiba (Valentino) and Thomas Hartland-Mackie (Tom Ford), Vinnie (Chloe) and Malcolm Reuben (Armani), Janet (Vionnet) and Crawford Brock (Brunello Cucinelli, Olivia Kearney (Naeem Kahn), Merry Vose (Roksanda), Kimberly Chandler (Juan Carlos Obando) and Browne Andrews (Ann Demeulemeester).

Of course, there were one or two that deserved some explanation. Jacqueline Anderson had eyes popping in her Mikael D. Seems that she had come directly from Neiman’s after being fitted into the figure-loving gown with its deep-diving neckline and sweeping train…Jennifer Clark channeled Scarlett O’Hara. She’d had Michael Faircloth create her skirt out of drapery material…Heidi Dillon’s Dior short black dress and shoes were engulfed in a sweeping Moschino cape that was reminiscent of Budweiser…Fav accessory of the night: Spanx!

One chap, who snuck in under the very fashionable crowd’s radar, was Bruce Hoeksema with CenterStage Chair Yvette Ostolaza. Yes, the extremely good looking Bruce is an established jewelry and leather designer in his own right, but he was also designer Valentino’s companion for 30 years, as well as an executive with the acclaimed fashion house before starting his own company. The story of this Midwest, “aw shucks” fella is one worth reading. to Mayor Mike Rawlings, she laughed, “It’s no big deal. I was his campaign fundraiser when he first ran for mayor.”… Olivia Kearney learned from Katy Bock about an amazing facial mask (SK II). Seems Katy had used it on husband Lawrence, whose mother asked if he’d had a face lift. Upon learning the cost of the treatment, one person said, “It ain’t cheap, but it’s cheaper than plastic surgery and doesn’t hurt.”…Subject of the night that rarely came up: the toppling of the crane on the DMA…One gent said to his dinner table companion, “I didn’t know Elaine (Agather) could sing.” Seems songbird Kitty Carmichael on stage resembled the banker. As for Elaine, she was at the Master’s. However, she did make a couple of cameo appearances in the Artball Funk sponsor video…Caterer Cassandra made the rounds checking tables to see which menu items were being gobbled up. When confronted about the main entrée — duck — she admitted that it was a tricky choice. People either love duck or don’t. As some guests hit the dance floor at the after-party, others headed home. However, two couples were heard telling their driver to hit the Burger King drive-thru.

There are so many other photos of the night at MySweetCharity Photo Gallery.

Enjoy It While You Can: Fellows Of The Dallas Historical Society Celebrate The Trammell Crow Estate

The home and property at 4500 Preston Road in Dallas, which was acquired by the late Margaret and F. Trammell Crow in 1961, for decades has been known as one of the finest, most historic estates in Dallas. So it naturally made for the perfect setting when the Dallas Historical Society held its black-tie Fellows Dinner there on Thursday, April 23. The Fellows group is the society’s major membership level.

Allan and Lynn McBee and Allie Beth and Pierce Allman*

Allan and Lynn McBee and Allie Beth and Pierce Allman*

Current Fellows co-chairs Allie Beth and Pierce Allman, who are marketing the Crow property through their real estate company, welcomed more than 70 guests to the sprawling, 103-year-old Tudor-style manse. Among them: Tincy Miller, Margot and Ross Perot, Susan and Joel Williams (he’s the Highland Park mayor), Madeline Jobst, Dr. Delva and Johnie King, and Itzel and Nathan Crow (he’s the grandson of Margaret and Trammell).

As guests enjoyed passed canapés including spinach asiago grilled cheese sandwiches and Pernod and dill cured salmon crostini, Pierce was explaining that the property, which sits on 6.6 acres, is one of just five multi-acre sites on Preston between Lakeside and Beverly. Miller, who serves on the State Board of Education, was chatting about her battles in Austin against the Common Core academic standards. And Caro Stalcup—she was the Fellows Dinner co-chair, along with Louise Caldwell—was reminiscing about how her grandmother and grandfather, Caro Buxton Edwards and H. L. Edwards, had had the home at 4500 Preston designed by C.D. Hill, a well-known Dallas architect. (It was Caldwell, by the way, who re-established the Dallas Historical Society Fellows in 1982 with Stanley Marcus.)

Louise Caldwell, Margot and Ross Perot and Caro Stalcup*

With dinner service underway—think baby greens salad, rosemary crusted beef tenderloin, corn pudding, and orange-ginger chocolate cake or Mascarpone ice cream—Lynn and Allan McBee, co-chairs of the society’s board of trustees, welcomed everyone before giving way to Allie Beth and Pierce. The latter made a joke: “Does everyone like the dinner?” he asked. “I’m from Arkansas, where a 7-course meal is a six-pack and a possum.”

Dallas Historical Society Dinner*

Then Pierce turned serious, calling the Crow Estate one of “the most significant properties in Dallas County” and introducing the evening’s featured speakers: Stalcup, her brother John Alexander, and their nephew Stuart Thomas. Caro recounted details of the family’s history, stretching back to H.L. Edwards’ birth in Wales, his immigration to Texas as a young man, and his great success here in the cotton business.

Jennifer and John Alexander*

Jennifer and John Alexander*

Caro’s grandmother was a niece of A.H. Belo, she went on, recalling how, as a child, she often played in the attic and hunted for Easter eggs in the Preston Road mansion. John also remembered the home, 65 years ago: “I could climb up in the magnolias and look in the windows and see what was going on,” he said, drawing laughter. One time on the property, Caro added, her mother put a drop of bourbon in the chicken feed, and the chickens got so “warm and tipsy” they had to be helped up on the roost.

Then all too quickly the evening came to a close, and some realized the irony in celebrating the heritage of the grand old Crow Estate. With a price tag of just under $60 million, the mansion is likely to be torn down by its new owners, who probably will want a more contemporary home in its place.

The spirits were high for the 2015 Côtes du Coeur Gala on Saturday, April 25, at the Hilton Anatole. No wonder! It was a mega-fundraiser for the American Heart Association. Needless to say, there were a lot of ladies in wine-colored gowns, hundreds of bottles of wine in the silent auction, loads of chefs cooking up a storm and a splashy red Escalade that was being raffled off.

Alas, the Anatole parking situation was being hit a second day in a row. This time the weather was fine, but the traffic jam around 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, at the Tower entrance of the Anatole wasn’t so fine and dandy.

As The Family Compass guests and hosts for The Legends Dinner pulled into the main entrance porte-cochère, the Dallas Côtes du Coeur Gala guests saw signs directing them to the Tower. But upon approaching the Tower, the sign indicated it was SER valet only.

Silent auction

Silent auction

As confused as guests were, Anatole valets stood in the driveway looking not quite sure what was going on. When the chief valet was asked what was going on, he said he didn’t know. Luckily, when Anatole management was notified of the black hole out front, the initial response was that it was another valet company’s problem. When confronted a second time, they realized that the hotel’s service was indeed supposed to be working the event. Immediately signs were placed and cars were handled just as quickly.

Red Escalade

Red Escalade

But once inside, none of the 1,400 black-tie wine lovers supporting the American Heart Association seemed to mind. They were way more focused on the countless tables of wines being offered up in the silent auction and the raffle tickets up for grabs to win the red Escalade.

The Gossip Bar was hidden behind massive curtains for the VIP party, including Kara and Randall Goss, Kathy Holt, Jim Severson, Victor Hugo, Gala Chair Kristen Johnston Sanger and her husband Ladd Sanger, and Nancy Gopez, who had co-chaired the raffle along with Kristi Bare. Kristi wasn’t able to attend since she was working The Family Compass dinner in the Stemmons Ballroom…Bank of America’s Richard Holt said the bank likes to be involved with this event because the American Heart Association/Dallas Division executive committee members have many corporate representatives, like Tim Wallace of Trinity Industries, Ron Haddock of Ashmore Energy and Randy Cain of EY…AT&T’s Holly Reed was wearing a wristband in memory of her AT&T colleague Cathy Coughlin, who had recently died…Gillian Breidenbach was leaving the next morning for a week with the girls in Mexico.

Kristen Johnston Sanger, Kathy Holt and Kate Rose Marquez

At one point Côtes du Coeur Chair Kate Rose Marquez announced that a bottle of champagne was to be sabered. One new-to-the-wine-world type sheepishly asked, “What’s a sabre slice?” Quickly, a vino aficionado patiently explained that instead of a hand twisting the cork out of the bottle, a sabre would be used. The sheepish one nodded and then asked his date, “Does that mean somebody’s going to stick a knife in the cork?”

Saddiq Mir

Saddiq Mir

He eventually found out how it’s done when Anatole Food and Beverage Director Saddiq Mir slid a long chef’s knife along the neck of a bottle of champagne not once, not twice, but three times when the cork finally popped off. Saddiq looked pretty disgusted with having to try more than once. So he grabbed another bottle to try again. This time he removed the foil and the cage and voila! Success the very first time as the cork went flying and champagne spewed forth to cheers.

Just as the champagne was being poured, a couple of lovely young ladies — Caitlyn Hefley and Gabriele Petrylaite — arrived wearing fur wraps. While furs are not surprising with this crowd, this time of year that type of outerwear is usually hunkering down in chilly fur storage. But the twosome were as bubbly as the champagne and part of Cary Maguire’s guest list. While Cary found a comfortable chair away from the other VIP’s, the gals made the rounds taking in the sights.

Around 7:30 a parade of young women holding huge lit balls started the procession into the ballroom. There guests discovered the stations hosted by celebrity chefs (Chief Chef Richard Chamberlain, Garth Blackburn, Eric Brandt, George Brown, Bruno Davaillon, Dean Fearing, Kevin Garvin with Anita Hirsch, Scott Gottlich, David Holben, Dan Landsberg, David McMillan, Carl Murray, Kent Rathbun, Severson, Hugh Stewart, John Tesar and Gerard Thompson ) serving up incredible samplings paired with wines.

Tables were set up throughout the room, but guests found themselves too busy grazing to spend much time at their places.

However, at the center of the room a violinist started playing on a round stage with a circular gauzy curtain that extended almost to the ceiling. But the fiddler was only drawing attention to what would happen next. Soon the curtain revealed a silk aerialist. As eyes rose to watch the graceful movements, mouths dropped imagining how such movements were possible.

But this entertainment was only building up to the live auction that included the Victoria Secret package going for a cool $50,000. By the time the auction was over, the Young at Heart After Party got underway.

The evening’s results? A $3.4M check for the American Heart Association. That’s a lot of cork popping.

Children’s Advocacy Center Of Collin County’s Black Tie Gala Folks Partied With Guests Joining The Pointer Sisters On Stage

There are just no two ways about it. Collin County is the kissing cousin of Dallas. The folks there are energetic, growing and bound and determined to do the best thing…especially when it comes to kids. Perhaps that’s why the Children’s Advocacy Center of Collin County felt right at home holding its annual Black Tie Gala presented by Rent-A-Center at the Hilton Anatole on Saturday, May 2.

As 825 of the black tie and glittery set including Christa Carrell, Cindy and Robert Sutley, Angela and Attorney General Ken Paxton, Tony Bradley, Dan Powers, Dave Hoffman, Richard Estell, Frank Stanesic and Ana and Raj Asava arrived, the gargantuan silent auction practically filled the reception area outside the Chantilly Ballroom with treasures ranging from clothes and jewelry to travel, wine and sports memorabilia.

Carolyn Speese and Cathy Ramsey

And then there were those rows of bags lined up on the tables behind a gong. As usual the bags sponsored by Willow Bend’s Neiman Marcus was a huge success with surprise goodies inside.

Longtime CACCC supporter Carolyn Speese told a buddy, “You’d better get a bag before they’re all gone.” And everybody knew when the bag count was dwindling. A gong was sounded as the sale was made.

Richard and Cathy Riccardi and Angela and Ken Paxton

Richard and Cathy Riccardi and Angela and Ken Paxton*

But it wasn’t just a silent auction. Heck, no! Of course, there was a dinner, but then there was the entertainment. Gala Co-Chairs Cathy and Richard Riccardi had arranged for the Pointer Sisters to entertain.

Realizing that the evening was to be a full one with a drive back to Collin County, the decision was made to have the meet-and-greet with the trio before the dinner.

One party circuit vet upon hearing that the Pointer Sisters would be on stage shrugged. Another, who had witnessed the Sisters in action at the Children’s “Celebration of Our Century” fundraiser in 2013, chastised the vet saying, “Just wait and see. The place is going to explode.”

Sadako Pointer, Anita Pointer and Ruth Pointer*

Truer words were never uttered. In addition to two of the original Sisters — Anita Pointer and Ruth Pointer — on stage, they were joined by Ruth’s granddaughter Sadako Pointer, who was obviously pregnant. Didn’t matter. The grandmother Sisters and mother-to-be nearly rocked the Chantilly’s chandeliers from the ceiling. At one point they offered to let anyone who made a nice financial contribution to CACCC to join them on stage. Whoa! Hands immediately went up and the sisters were joined by the likes of Anne Davidson.

Yup, those Collin County cousins know how to party and how to raise funds. In this case, the net was $525,000 to support abused and neglected children.

Micki is going to have to clone herself. In addition to serving as honorary co-chair for both events, she’s also going to serve as chair for the First Sight Fashion Show and Luncheon that will be held in the Winspear lobby and presented by NorthPark Center. On the runway will be fashions by Mulberry plus the showstopping “original opera-inspired designs by Dallas style-makers.”

Who will the 2015 “style-makers” be? Stay tuned. That news is just around the corner.

Dinner Co-Chairs Anne and Steve Stodghill have arranged for the black tie event to include a red carpet arrival for the VIP’s, who will attend a seated three-course dinner in a tent in Sammons Park adjoining the Winspear.

Following dinner, the guests will attend the season’s opening performance of “Great Scott” and then return to the restaged tent for the after party with DJ Lucy Wrubel handling the music.

Individual tickets for the luncheon are $250. As for the Friday evening festivities, the tickets are $1,000 per person with tables starting at $25,000. All the ticket and sponsor information can be found here.

La Fiesta De Las Seis Banderas Celebrates 30 Years Of Park Cities Fundraising With 40 Bowing Duchesses

A snapshot of the area in front of the Hilton Anatole’s Chantilly Ballroom on Saturday, June 13 — hundreds of splendiferously dressed Park Cities types in formal attire in the reception area and Southwest Airlines folks like recently retired pilot Randy Henderson and Phyllis Dooly passing by in beach attire.

The hotel was hosting the extremes on this night. The Southwest crew was holding its annual party for 2,500 in the Trinity Ballroom, while La Fiesta de las Seis Banderas was proving that Dallasites don’t let a little thing like summer slow down the formal fundraising activities.

While La Fiesta de las Seis Banderas (translation: The Celebration of the Six Flags) may seem like a mouthful of words, it has grown over the past 29 years to support countless organizations. This year’s crop included C.A.R.E., Connecting Point of Park Cities, The Elisa Project, The Family Place/HPISD Be Project, Friends of the University Park Public Library, Highland Park Education Foundation, Highland Park Literary Festival, HP Arts, HPHS Community Service Council, HPHS Counseling Department and Student Council, HPHS Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter, HPHS Model United Nations, HPHS Science Festival, HPHSA Student Emergency Fund, HPHS Youth and Government and Park Cities Heritage House at Dallas Heritage Village.

Pierce and Allie Beth Allman

Pierce and Allie Beth Allman

As part of the 29th year anniversary, La Fiesta founders Lindalyn Adams, Pierce Allman and Jennie Reeves were the honorary season co-chairs and were just downright giddy and amazed at how their little brainchild had grown into such a major event.

Back in 1986, their original purpose was to “save the oldest house in Highland Park from demolition by moving it to Old City Park.” That first event was held in Highland Park Village, with six duchesses representing Park Cities families “in historically accurate gowns representing the six flags of Texas.” Since that time more than $6.9M has been raised benefiting various Park Cities programs.

Mary Hubbard

Mary Hubbard

This night was the culmination of La Fiesta Co-Chairs Mary Hubbard’s and Lori Martin’s directing countless volunteers, who had arranged for 40 duchesses and their escorts to be officially presented to their families and friends. In the weeks leading up to the big night, there had been so much activity besides the creation of the gowns that reflected each duchess’s title. There had been numerous receptions held at private homes, the luncheon at Belo Mansion with the display of the gowns on dolls co-chaired by Tracy Martin and Jennifer Patterson, and now the gala itself that was being co-chaired by Eloise Meachum and Missy Rothwell.

2015 La Fiesta de las Seis Banderas escorts

2015 La Fiesta de las Seis Banderas escorts

In the ballroom, event photographer James French and his team were doing the formal portraits of the duchesses and escorts. That in itself was a special event. With one photographer atop a ladder, James had to raise his voice to be heard over the chatter of 80 duchesses and escorts. Sounding like a football coach trying to shout plays, he managed to get the 40 gents in white tie and tails in place for their photo. As soon as it was thumbs-up on that shot, he gave the marching orders for the duchesses to join their escorts on stage. This one was a wee bit more challenging. One duchess was hidden behind another couple. Calling duchesses and escorts by their names, it was apparent that James knew each and every one. After all, he had shot their individual portraits.

With some maneuvering of couples, the problem of the missing duchess was solved.

La Fiesta de las Seis Banderas duchesses and escorts

The third and final shot was of the duchesses only. Unlike the “guys’ photo set-up,” where the fellows were shoulder-to-shoulder, the ladies required spacing to allow for the best presentation of their full-length gowns.

Brooke Strodel and Dan Strodel

Unlike other presentation balls, where the gowns are snow white, the 40 duchesses’ gowns looked like a collection of gems with the array of colors because each gown was to reflect the duchy represented. For instance, Brooke Strodel was Duchess of the Bluebonnet, so her light blue gown was highlighted by a full-length sash of blues.

As soon as James declared the shoot done, the duchesses made their way down the stairs from the stage to await their formal entry on stage escorted by their fathers, scheduled for 7 p.m.

Outside the ballroom, parents, family members and friends seemed almost giddy. Sure, there was a monsoon going on outside, but these folks were just pleased to have a reason to get all gussied up. It was nice to dress up after weeks of casual pool parties.

In addition to husband Jim Francis, her dad Bill Bobo, who was preparing to turn 91, was on hand for Debbie’s niece Kaelson Little’s presentation. Looking at a display of past duchess gowns and old clippings, Honorary Co-Chair Jennie teased her husband Stuart Reeves about one that listed him as “Bob.” Jennie recalled how daughter Lucy Wrubel had been a duchess “the second year of La Fiesta” Adding to the memory bank, Stuart remembered moving the house that was saved that first year in the middle of the night. At one point in the move it barely cleared an overpass by inches. After the move was completed they had a margarita party at the original On The Border.

Clay and Chrissy Jenkins

Judge Clay Jenkins with his wife Chrissy Jenkins admitted that this whole affair was new to him. He confided, “Under the heading of you can take the country boy out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the boy: what’s a debutante? I wikipedia’ed it today. Didn’t know what this was.”

But Clay soon found out firsthand when the doors to the Chantilly Ballroom opened just before 7. At 7:08 with more than 900 guests seated at their tables, the La Fiesta Herald Trumpets and Drum Corps led the parade of 40 escorts into the ballroom and up to the stage.

Procession of flags, trumpets, drums and escorts

Following the singing of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” the escorts took their seats at the side of the stage. Mary and Lori thanked the numerous volunteers who had made the evening possible and Pierce addressed the group, recalling his days at Highland Park High and the importance of the event’s supporting Park Cities programs.

Then master of ceremonies Al Raya announced each duchess, describing both the duchy she represented as well as her accomplishments that impressed the adults in the audience. Most proud of the young women’s achievements were their dads, who escorted the duchesses onto the stage and up to the front of the runway and then center stage, where they bowed. Upon arising, they were presented with a white rose by their fathers and escorted to their places on the tiered stage by their escorts.

While some might have been confused by the interesting assortment of duchies, oldtimers explained that each duchy belonged to one of the six flags that had flown over the state of Texas, plus the La Fiesta flag. For instance, Lauren Beal was the Duchess of the United State representing the flag of the United States; Loring Dalton was Duchess of Highland Park representing the flag of La Fiesta; Lauren Sands was the Duchess of Cinco de Mayo representing the flag of Mexico, etc.

As the presentation wore on, the whoops grew. Paige McDaniel admitted that her table just couldn’t resist cheering when her niece Caroline McDaniel was announced. However, she promised that decorum would be more in order when Caroline will be presented at the Dallas Symphony Orchestra League Gala on Saturday, February 20, at the Meyerson.

One La Fiesta vet confided that the hope was for the presentation to only take two hours. And that hope came true as the final duchess made her bow just before 9.

Then it was time to relax and join friends on the dance floor and for selfies.

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar and his wife Dara Hegar will be in Dallas on Saturday, September 26, at the Morton Meyerson. The reason? 2015 Dallas Symphony Orchestra AT&T Co-Chairs Jennifer and Coley Clark and Katherine and Key Coker have just revealed that the Hegars will be the honorary co-chairs for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra fundraiser.

Before being elected to the comptroller position last November, Glenn was a member of the Texas House of Representatives and the Texas Senate and is a sixth-generation Texan.

“The Dallas Symphony is a cornerstone of the cultural life in Dallas and throughout North Texas,” said Glenn. “Dara and I are honored to be a part of this event and to help raise money for their important mission to share music and music education in our great state.”

The fundraiser that is the first official black-tie event of the season will also be AT&T’s 15th year as the title sponsor.

According to Dallas-based AT&T Senior VP Holly Reed, “We are pleased to return as title sponsor of the DSO AT&T Gala for the 15th year and to support the DSO and their role in the cultural vibrancy of Dallas.”

If your budget won’t allow the full-blown night of cocktailing, dining, concerting with maestro Jaap van Zweden and violinist Pinchas Zukerman and after-party, then consider just the concert and after-party with DJ Lucy Wrubel conducting the music that’s only $99.  OK, so that may be more than a Saturday night movie including popcorn, but come on. In addition to a live performance with Jaap and Pinchas and the after-party with open bar, you’ll get a gander at all the incredible fashions … and this one really brings them out!

“My husband Key and I are thrilled to be co-chairing the 2015 Dallas Symphony Orchestra AT&T Gala with our friends, Jennifer and Coley Clark, on Saturday, September 26, 2015.

“Our commitment to the Dallas Symphony Orchestra is personal as well as civic. Key and I had our first date at a Dallas Symphony concert in the Meyerson, and we have been attending concerts ever since. Under Music Director Jaap van Zweden the orchestra has never sounded better, and the excitement and inspiration achieved during concerts are moments we treasure. It is important for everyone in Texas to realize the musical gem we have in North Texas with the Dallas Symphony.

“We want to share our enthusiasm and invite everyone to experience the Dallas Symphony at the Meyerson. No matter your musical expertise or taste, the Dallas Symphony offers concerts that will appeal to all audiences. We welcome you to join us at the AT&T Gala and help us celebrate our world-renowned Dallas Symphony Orchestra!

“The 2015 DSO AT&T Gala is the Dallas Symphony’s largest annual fundraiser, benefiting the DSO’s music and education programs, which touch the lives of more than 230,000 North Texas residents annually, including 30,000 children. Art, culture and education are important to us, and we fully support the Dallas Symphony in its mission to share music and music education throughout North Texas. Imagine if this resource for uplift and entertainment were not available to all. The DSO AT&T Gala provides funds that allow many children their first chance to hear our wonderful orchestra, either at a youth concert, a community parks concert, or a performance in a school. Over the years, our children Key Jr. and Olivia have loved attending the Musical Petting Zoo, where they have had the opportunity to try playing the instruments before a concert.

“The Gala will feature a champagne and cocktail reception, three-course dinner, concert featuring legendary violinist Pinchas Zukerman performing with Music Director Jaap van Zweden and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Gala After-Party featuring savories, desserts and dancing.

“We’re extremely grateful for our sponsors AT&T, The Ritz-Carlton Hotel, NorthPark Center and Modern Luxury for helping us make this event possible. Full-evening Gala tickets including reception, dinner, concert and after-party start at $1,250. For more information about full-evening Gala tickets, table purchases and sponsorships, contact Tab Boyles at 214.871.4045. Tickets for the concert and Gala After-Party start at $99 and may be purchased at www.MyDSO.com or by calling 214.TIX.4DSO.

“We are thrilled to be the chairs for The Dallas Opera’s season opening festivities. Opening night at the opera has traditionally been a very dramatic event, usually fashioned around all the pageantry of grand opera. This year, we have the chance to kick things back a little and create the opening around one of Texas’ great loves — football. It’s a unique, challenging and yet really wonderful opportunity. We know we’re going to have a lot of fun with this. Honorary Co-Chairs Mrs. Micki Rawlings and The Honorable Michael S. Rawlings are on board for the events which adds even more to the excitement! We hope you’ll join us!”

“Fall in Dallas is typically flush with high class events and posh occasions that accommodate virtually every artistic desire and inclination. However, none this year will compare to the season opening of The Dallas Opera: First Sight/First Night.

“The season kicks off with First Sight Fashion Show and Luncheon presented by NorthPark Center on Thursday, October 29, 11:00 a.m. in the beautiful C. Vincent Prothro Lobby of the Winspear Opera House. First Sight is one of Dallas’ finest fashion shows, this year showcasing the remarkable designs of Mulberry. Additionally, the luncheon will introduce The Dallas Opera 2015-2016 Season Collection with five exquisite creations, one for each opera, from internationally renowned designers based in Dallas. Individual tickets for First Sight are available for $250 and tables start at $10,000.

“First Night presented by Deutsche Asset & Wealth Management features a ‘celebrity’ red carpet entrance, a gourmet pre-performance dinner, a world premiere opera and rockin’ After Party. The excitement begins on Friday, October 30 at 5:30 p.m. First Night showcases the Linda and Mitch Hart Opening Night performance of Great Scott. This will be the latest accomplishment from one of America’s most sought after operatic composers, Jake Heggie. The plot line of this witty opera is guaranteed to touch the hearts of Texans given one of its key elements—football. The story revolves around the conflict that occurs when the opening night of title character Arden Scott’s world premiere of a long-lost, never performed opera falls on the same night as the local football team’s championship game. Opera and football—what a novel pairing! Individual tickets for First Night are available for $1,000 and tables start at $25,000. All Dinner tickets include an After-Party ticket. Opening night opera performance tickets are sold separately.

“Together First Sight and First Night create the premiere events of the social season in Dallas!

Les Femmes du Monde will celebrate the 31st Woman of the Year Award black-tie dinner on Wednesday, October 14, 2015, at the Dallas Country Club. President Alyce Heinrich and I announced Virginia Cook as the 2015 distinguished woman at the beautiful Beverly Drive home of Gina and Scott Ginsberg in March.

“Virginia is thrilled to be this year’s Woman of the Year recipient, and is someone who has helped make this organization and many nonprofits successful, embracing education for members and youth, while at the same time, helping others in our community. Virginia Cook is CEO of Virginia Cook Realtors, served as the first woman president of the MetroTex Association of Realtors and the Texas Association of Realtors, both of which named her Realtor of the Year. Prior to founding Virginia Cook Realtors, she worked closely with Henry Miller and Vance Miller, and sold her first company to them while she was still in her 20s. She had built her firm to 13 agents, which started the residential branch of Henry S. Miller Real Estate Brokerage. She served as the president of that company for 28 years. Throughout her career, Virginia has consistently supported a broad range of organizations and charities with her time, energy and resources.

Les Femmes du Monde*

“Virginia is honored to be included with some of the past Woman of the Year recipients as Juanita Miller, Margaret McDermott, Pat Smith, former First Lady Laura Bush, Ruth Collins Sharp Altshuler, Gloria Campos, Lynn McBee and others.

“Les Femmes du Monde began in 1961 at the encouragement of Gen. Robert J. Smith, Chairman of the Board of the Dallas Council on World Affairs, who hosted a luncheon at the City Club for 20 prominent young women. He proposed that they form a special fund-raising committee to be called Les Femmes du Monde which would support the Dallas Council on World Affairs with visiting delegates and efforts to accomplish future goals. These eager young women began immediately with Helen Storey as its first president. Moving forward, in1987 Les Femmes du Monde became its own nonprofit organization, and in 1995 added Children’s Medical Center Child Life Program (now called Children’s Health).

“The Woman of the Year Award Dinner began in 1986 with Doris Dixon as the first ever recipient. Les Femmes du Monde has been able to provide the International Education Fund for the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth over $2 million since 1961 and the Child Life Program at Children’s Health with over $670,000 since 1998.

There are those who swear by their passports that there is no marvelous place to be than Tuscany. The winner of this TACA Custom Auction Gala package* will become very popular when their friends learn that this sweetheart deal is for eight.

Tour Of Tuscany** (Value: $40,000)

Tour of Tuscany****

Tour of Tuscany***

For centuries Tuscany has been an Italian treasure. During the 15th century, it was considered the birthplace of the Renaissance. Its natural beauty and mild climate inspired artists, writers, philosophers and political intrigue. Now, six centuries later, the region has only grown in stature with the luxurious residences, the Italian cuisine accompanied by regional wines and the breathtaking architecture.

The winner of this package will tour Tuscany with the first stop being a tasting at the Poliziano winery in Montepulciano, where the eight will see how the wine is produced.

The next stop will be Monticchiello in Val d’Orcia. On a hilltop this tiny medieval village has inspired writers, poets and artists with its magnificent view of the surrounding landscape.

The third spot on the tour is Pienza located just between Montepulciano and Montalcino. Known as “the touchstone of Renaissance urbanism,” guests will be able to stroll the town that was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Put The Duomo, Palazzo Vescovile and Palazzo Vescovile on your must-see list. As for the tastebud needs, Pienza’s locally produced Pecorino Cheese is a must to sample, so the eight will have taste the cheeses and salamis.

The final stop is Montalcino that is just down the road. In addition to its medieval fortress, the town boasts the famous Brunello di Montalcino wine. Of course, the guests will have to have a tasting of this world-renown wine.

During the seven-night stay in Tuscany, the eight will have Villa ai Cedri Agriturismo near Cortona to call home along with a private chef, three-course supper.

Be forewarned: None of the eight may want to leave. Shucks!
