Dallas was the center of the Chanel world in December for the Metiers d’Art. That one night in Fair Park was hardly enough for a Coco aficionado. That’s why this RBC Wealth Management TACA Custom Auction item will satisfy the hunger for experiencing Paris with “time on your hands.”

Chanel And Paris* (Value: $28,600)

Mademoiselle’s Paris is where one truly can celebrate and absorb the atmosphere and surroundings that inspired her timeless creations for decades.

Chanel men's timepiece**

And speaking of timeless, this package will provide both the City of Lights and a Chanel design that will always be timely. For four nights, two people will call the Mandarin Oriental home and be free to explore the city on the Seine. Whether it’s checking the newest exhibition at the Louvre, shopping in the couture salons or taking day trips to the surrounding countryside, the agenda is open.

Alas, even the best of times must end, but not necessarily in this case. Thanks to beautiful-handcrafted his-and-hers Chanel timepieces, the couple will always have Paris. While her black ceramic J12 watch features diamond markers and quartz movement, his sleek black ceramic J12 watch has automatic movement. Vive la difference!

Thanks to American Airlines, the pair will travel business class roundtrip.

Just dining with RBC Wealth Management TACA Custom Auction Co-Chairs Dean Fearing and Wanda Gierhart would be a treat for the palate and the company. But these two don’t do anything like most blokes. This package for two couples is designed with such creativity and Wow! factor that even your bestest friends will doubt it happened.

Rock Out In Cabo San Lucas* (Value: Priceless)

Most folks arrive at the world-fabulous Capella Pedregal and swear it’s a slice of heaven and don’t want to budge. Each room is palatial with fireplace, private pool, perfect view of the ocean and a staff that lives to set a new standard for service.

During the three night stay, one dinner will be held at Capella Pedregal’s signature restaurant Don Manuel.

But Wanda and Dean arranged for a dinner in the seaside estate of a local, and not just any local — former lead singer for Van Halen, The Red Rocker Sammy Hagar. It has a marvelous view of the Pacific Ocean, as well as the Cabos San Lucas Los Arches. Naturally, no ordinary cook would do for this occasion, so Dean will commandeer the kitchen.

And one more stop during the trip will have Wanda and Dean taking the foursome for a “special excursion to Cabo Wabo Cantina, Sammy’s famous cantina and restaurant,” where the 1999 video for “Mas Tequila” was filmed. Who knows? Maybe Dean will play his guitar?

Who has time to wander the world in search of the perfect retreat, when it lies just a quick ride away? This RBC Wealth Management TACA Custom Auction item is ideal for the four who want to get away from the ho-hum routine without really getting away.

Staycation In Downtown Dallas* (Value: $17,500)

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, downtown Dallas has returned to its glory days when a big-deal date was dancing at the Baker Hotel’s Peacock Terrace Ballroom or taking in a movie at the grand Palace Theater with its legendary Wurlitzer organ rising from the orchestra pit between movies with Weldon Flanagan at the keyboard.

Replacing the Baker, the Wurlitzer and the oldies are a whole new lifeblood including the Arts District, the Klyde Warren Park, Perot Museum, Victory Center and high-rise homes. Leading the charge is the Joule Hotel that has brought together a staff, services and accommodation to match the most prestigious world hotels.

The Joule**

The Joule**

For two nights the Joule’s luxurious two-bedroom penthouse will be “home suite home” complete with living room, library, dining room and kitchen. The floor-to-ceiling windows and in-house telescope provide the perfect view of the downtown life below.

Start the mornings with breakfast at the Joule’s Weekend Coffee with its Marzocco-brewed coffees and waffles. One night plan on dining in the Joule’s CBD Provisions.

For sun worshipers, the glass-fronted, heated Adam D. Tihany designed pool cantilevered eight feet beyond the hotel and the poolside cabana services are just a few floors away. And if additional pampering is required, there’s always the world–renowned ESPA with hands-on attention. Or if a fitness regimen must be kept, VITAL Fitness Center offers everything from yoga classes to core fitness and is equipped with everything from top-of-the-line equipment to strength-training machines.

The only problem is when the time comes to check out and return to the life of reality outside the Joule.

2014 Dallas Symphony Orchestra Gala Turned Out The Swells In Couture Designs And A Surprise VIP

$

The Morton H. Meyerson was celebrating its 25th anniversary in early September. And like any 20-something, the sky was the limit for its celebration.

Jan Miller and Jeff Rich

Jan Miller and Jeff Rich

But the ultimate highlight was the Saturday Dallas Symphony Orchestra Gala. In the months leading up to the big hoop-la, Gala Co-Chairs Jan Miller and Jeff Rich promised a grand affair. Private dinners had been held to ramp up the interest of committee members and sponsors.

In the weeks leading up to the black-tie fundraiser, thing started falling into place. Margot and Ross Perot, who had made the “Wow!” contribution to make the building reality and had requested the place be named in honor of Perot associate Mort Meyerson, were named as the gala’s honorary co-chairs. Then Micki and Mayor Mike Rawlings were added to the honorary chair roster. Carole and Scott Murray would be honorary media co-chairs. AT&T was returning as title sponsor were building the promise. Then it was announced that legendary violinist Itzhak Perlman would be performing with DSO Maestro Jaap van Zweden conducting the DSO musicians.

Still it wasn’t enough for the Miller-Rich team. Less than two weeks before the big night, it was announced that, like the Dallas Opera, a simulcast would broaden the opportunity for the non-black-tie-types to take in and enjoy the musical experience of the night. The simulcast was being presented by Bank of America, Merrill Lynch Wealth Management and U.S. Trust and produced in partnership with WFAA. The lawns of Klyde Warren Park would be the spot if the weather cooperated.

Just hours before the first guest arrived on Saturday, September 12, emails were sent to certain folks that “a special guest” would be part of the festivities. Would it be someone from the Meyerson past? Would it be another world-famous musician? Would it be a politico bold facer with credentials more impressive than a senator?

The answer would arrive around 7. Stay tuned was the word passed.

In the meantime, guests arrived both at the Flora Street main entrance and the underground driveway. The threat of weather proved to be nothing more than yesterday’s news. Actually, it was rather perfect for those lounging at the park. In fact, Merrill Lynch’s Troy Schiermeyer opted for the private party at Savor for bank friends instead of joining the black tie set. His reason? He could enjoy a glass of wine, while listening to the concert.

As the first hints of guests arriving took place, the key players gathered downstairs for official photos and to meet the students from Booker T. Washington.

Margot and Ross Perot

Upstairs the crowd came in waves of formal finery. After all this event was the first black tie function of the 2014 fall season. In other words, there was no holding back when it came to couture fashions, makeup, hair or jewelry.

Hal Brierley, Richard and Kathy Holt and Diane Brierley

Hal Brierley, Richard and Kathy Holt and Diane Brierley

In honor of the Meyerson’s 25th anniversary, gals like Holly Reed, Leslie Diers and Linda Ivy wore shimmering silver gowns. Both Holly and Leslie claimed not to recall the designer, but Linda didn’t hold back. It was a Donna Karen and the earrings were from Heritage Auction…D’Andra Simmons-Lock opted for Carolina Herrera fabric but had it designed by Jamal, while her pal Jeri Kleiman was in a very form-sitting Fendi…Speaking of Herrera, Dallas First Lady Micki was in Herrera with earrings from Eiseman and a “classic” velvet Armani shawl…Gillian Breidenbach was in a black gown made for her with her hair pulled back in a tight bun (It’s giving me a headache.”)…Kathy Holt wore a slender lace Kay Unger, while Jan Miller opted for a white tunic by Linda Platt topped off with vintage 1940’s earrings that she bought in Paris and a dazzling 1960’s gold flat-collar-style necklace…Betsy Whitson-Crousen swept in wearing a black Oscar de la Renta with Dolce Gabbana earrings…Vicki Briley White had friends check out the back of her St. John evening…Pat McEvoy, having just chaired the Crystal Charity Ball’s 10 Best Dressed, wore Zac Posen, while buddy Claire Emanuelson was in black Valentino with Eiseman earrings…Margo Keyes accentuated her Escada skirt and black beaded top with hotter-than-hot Louboutin pink heels…Barbara Durham was in Dolce Gabbana with a necklace that husband Steve had given her for completing the New York City Marathon…Myriam Graham was in Diane von Furstenberg… Sparkling with beads and crystals were Gina Ginsburg in Sherri Hill and Anna-Sophia van Zweden in Naeem Khan and Eiseman twinkles…Carrie Scotti stood out in the crowd with her sequined calypso pants and Alice + Olivia top… Another in Naeem Khan was Laree Hulshoff, who accessorized it with cat slippers… Past DSO Gala Chair Barbara Daseke wore Balenciaga…Pat Smith with daughter Skylar in gowns from Belk.

Betsy Whitson-Crousen

Betsy Whitson-Crousen

Jim White and Vicki Briley-White

And the fellas weren’t too shabby either in the designer department. Bryan Diers was in Zegna (“I left my Versace at home.”) with James Reid studs from Santa Fe. He picked them out and wife Leslie gifted him with them…Scott Ginsburg in Brioni… Jeremy Lock in “Whatever D’Andra picked out.” She picked out Joseph Abboud…Dwight Emanuelson and David Kleiman in Isaia…Charles McEvoy in Zegna… Jim White in Pal Zileri…Steve Durham in Hadleigh…Steve Ivy in Burberry…Randall Graham and Anthony Scott in Armani.

Of course, there were hints of orange throughout the throngs (Jonathan’s bowtie, Jan’s clutch, etc.) Hello? Orange and AT&T go together like Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, Beyoncé and Jayz or Batman and Robin.

Out for just the second time in recent weeks, Hal Brierley sported a pair of crutches he picked up in England after taking a nasty fall in Bath. The ambulance ride cost $6. Despite compliments to the British medical community, he still had Baylor operate on his knee within 24 hours of landing in Dallas. As for the evening’s concert, Dallas Symphony President/CEO Jonathan Martin arranged for a footstool in the Brierley’s box for Hal.

Mary McDermott Cook, Margaret McDermott, Jonathan Martin and Sandi Pei

Having just flown in from Frankfort, Mary McDermott Cook “escorted” her mom Margaret McDermott to the gala. Immediately upon arriving, they were greeted by Jonathan and Sandi Pei, who was subbing for his father/Meyerson architect I.M. Pei.

As a Dutch film crew made the rounds interviewing guests, word was quickly passed that the VIP guests was pulling up in “that black SUV.” Photographers were sent rushing to catch the moment of arrival. The back door opened and orange was everywhere. Orange gown topped off with flaming red hair. It was the Duchess of York Sarah Ferguson. Thanking the driver, she proved the “Fergie” likability element to one and all.

Jonathan Martin and Sarah Ferguson

Jonathan Martin and Sarah Ferguson

As she walked to the Meyerson entrance, someone told her it was good to have her back in Dallas. She smiled and thanked the person and then asked hesitantly, “Do you recall when I was last here?” Before an answer could be provided, she found herself being hugged by Jan, welcomed by a svelte Jonathan (he’d lost 80 pounds) and interviewed by another film crew.

She had just arrived in time to meet and be greeted by the swell set.

At 7:20 the fine set were called to dinner with Fergie graciously obliging those who wanted her in their selfies.

As hundreds gathered for a seated dinner of heritage field greens with grilled shrimp, grilled roma tomato, roasted pepper, caper pearl pasta and mozzarella salad with spice raspberry chipotle dressing following by an entrée of roasted tenderloin of beef, cognac bordelaise, golden sweet yam and parsnip whipped potato, maple glazed baby carrots and fine green beans, the crowds at Klyde Warren were growing for the concert.

Afterwards, the black-tie set moved from the McDermott Concert Hall to Opus for the after party with Lucy Wrubel once again in charge of the music. Meanwhile, those in the Park watched a dazzling firework show that concluded the 25th anniversary celebration.

Over at the Omni Dallas Hotel on Saturday, September 20,  folks like Jan Miller and Jeff Rich, Holly and Stubbs Davis, Jan Rees-Jones, and Stacey and Don Kivowitz wore their finest fabrics (no fur, leathers or feathers for this group) for Mission: Pawssible, the 2014 Fur Ball fundraiser for the SPCA of Texas. The fifth annual event featured a silent and live auction, a scrumptious dinner (radicchio bowl and mixed greens, beef short rib and grilled gulf shrimp, chocolate pot du crème), music by the Think Big Party Band, casino gaming and videos starring four-legged critters.

Here is a more detailed report from the field:

Jocelyn White*

Jocelyn White*

“The SPCA of Texas gave more than 650 guests a mission that proved to be ‘PAWSsible’ at this year’s Fur Ball. The evening kicked off with Master of Ceremonies and SPCA of Texas Board Chair Jocelyn White searching for SPCA of Texas president James Bias. Special Agent Daisy the German Shepherd sent Agent-in-Training Jasper the German Shepherd puppy on assignment to get the secret to the SPCA of Texas’ success to James Bias. That secret? The SPCA of Texas’ wonderful supporters!

Kit Moncrief and Russell Dealey*

“Long-time, dedicated friends and supporters, Russell Dealey and Kit Moncrief, were this year’s honorary chairs.

“This high-rolling event would not have been possible without enthusiastic and compassionate co-chairs, Katy Murray and Kelly Thompson, whose devotion to animals is undeniable. All proceeds from this year’s Fur Ball, nearly $450,000, will help the SPCA of Texas, the leading animal welfare agency in North Texas, continue to rescue, heal and find homes for thousands of animals in the coming year.

“The SPCA of Texas also presented the 2014 Spencer Humanitarian Award. Named for warm-hearted entrepreneur and animal advocate Mary Spencer, the Spencer Humanitarian Awards recognize an individual, company or group whose extraordinary efforts have made a positive difference for animals. The 2014 recipient of the Spencer Humanitarian Award has made a huge impact in the lives of animals in North Texas, Holly Forsythe.

Holly Forsythe and Terri Phillips*

“The evening was complete with a lavish, seated dinner, decadent cocktails, stunning floral arrangements and a bevy of casino tables where guests could cash in for critters. The SPCA of Texas also featured a heartwarming video that showed a special four-legged alumnus, Bailey before she was rescued from inhumane conditions. In fact, Bailey and her entire family got on stage to show off how incredible Bailey looks today.

“Everyone was dressed in their best agent gear, and really got down to the funky beats of Think Big Party Band.

“Sincere thanks to the event’s special partners, including:

  • “Platinum Level sponsors — Russell E. Dealey and Jan Rees-Jones;
  • “Gold Level sponsors — Stacey and Don Kivowitz, Katy Murray, Stacy Searcy, Kelly and Craig Thompson and Jocelyn White and Kim Seal;
  • “Silver Level sponsors — Diane and Hal Brierley, Gwen and Leldon Echols, Hill’s Science Diet, Tanya Roberts, Claire Schwarz and Mary Spencer and VCA Animal Hospitals; and

“The SPCA of Texas would like to thank everyone who made this night possible for all the special animals at the SPCA of Texas.”

TACA RBC Wealth Management Custom Auction Was A Stellar Success Despite Broken Promises

$

0

Despite problems behind the scenes, the TACA RBC Wealth Management Custom Auction came off with paddles hoisted, elegantly clad bidders and a meal fit for the pickiest food critic on Friday, September 26.

And what were the problems? More about them later.

The evening was spectacularly perfect for a black-tie, night-out-on-the-town. Hotel guests at the Mansion must have thought Dallasites spend every night in Armani, Herrera and the usual couture suspects. The 339 TACA types looked so marvelously at home in tuxedos and gowns. Oh, but just because they looked knock-out-terrific, it didn’t mean a fortune was spent on clothing. One gal whispered, “Mine cost $20 but don’t tell.” Sorry, but you’ll just have to wonder who she was.

Once past the check-in, the crowd gathered in the Promenade and newly refreshed Pavilion Ballroom. Among them were nine former gala chairs including Susan Collins, who chaired the very first one a while back.

Mike and Pebble McGehee

Mike and Pebble McGehee

Newlyweds Pebble and Mike McGehee were asked how long they had been hitched. Pebble said, “About a month.” Mike followed up with, “27 days.”

Erin Mathews and Russ Davis

Erin Mathews and Russ Davis

Among the Allie Beth Allman crowd were Carol McBride, Doris and Jack Jacobs, Erin Mathews and Russ Davis and, of course Allie Beth and husband Pierce, who was scheduled to discuss his coverage of the Kennedy assassination at the Sixth Floor Museum on October 4.

Former retailer types Erin and Russ proved they still knew their stuff. When asked what they were wearing, Erin reported Jason Woo and Russ add that his tuxedo was by Canali.

Hal Brierley and friend

Hal Brierley and friend

On the other hand, Hal Brierley’s tuxedo was taking a backseat to his newest accessory. Instead of the crutches that he had at the Dallas Symphony Orchestra Gala, he was using a snazzy cane courtesy of Frank Risch.

Wanda Gierhart and Dean Fearing

Wanda Gierhart and Dean Fearing

Custom Auction Co-Chairs Wanda Gierhart and Dean Fearing evidently had made quite a team in putting things together. Someone asked Dean to predict the evening’s take. His response: “Big money!” He added that he saw a lot of new faces in the crowd bringing a new energy to the event. Where did they come from? Wanda piped in with a smile, “Our friends.”

As the champagne flowed, the crowd grew to capacity including Honorary Co-Chairs Ann and Lee Hobson, TACA Chairman of the Board Nancy Carlson and her husband Clint (Lady Nancy will be chairing the Dallas Museum of Art’s 2015 Art Ball), Rebecca and Barron Fletcher, Margo and Jim Keyes, Lauryn Gayle and Tom White, Roslyn Dawson Thompson and Rex Thompson, Donna Wilhelm, Cattle Baron’s Co-Chair Jill Tananbaum, Lucian “Food & Wine Ambassador for DFW” LaBarba, Dolph Haas, Carol and Don Glendening, Carol Reed, Chris Heinbaugh, Katherine and Chris LaLonde, Carrie and Andy Teller, Lucilo Pena, Lee Cobb, Barbara and Don Daseke, Patrick Chen, Shannon Brame, Faye Briggs, Ralph Gorman, Nick Even, Lynn and Allan McBee, Christina and Allen White, Jodie and Billy Payton, Lisa and Bill Ogle and Laree and Ben Fischer, who were headed to Mexico for the Dallas Contemporary tour.

Just as it seemed there was not one iota of space left, the magical call-to-chow-down-chimes were heard sounding through the rooms.

In the King Shepard Suite, new TACA Board Member Jay Oppenheimer officially welcomed the guests, despite one table’s chatter. He joked, “I think they asked me to do this because I have a big mouth.” The chatter ended.

And speaking of mouths, they were enjoying the menu created by Rosewood Mansion Chef Bruno Davaillon. For those who had not read their menu card, the first course was a surprise. It looked like chunks of watermelons atop a clear gelatin. Instead their first bite resulted in eyes wide open. It was ahi tuna in a gazpacho gelee with radish, croutons and tonnato sauce. Even those who may have been sour on raw fish were very pleased.

The entrée of beef tenderloin was four fingers high and a clinched fist wide. It was accompanied by chickpea fries, zucchini tapenade and smoked Fresno reduction.

Arm-in-arm, the co-chair team of WanDean visited each table like they’d been hosting for years.

As for dessert, the smiling guests toddled to the Promenade, where Nicholas Blouin had prepared a dessert buffet that would have sent Willy Wonka into a coma — black current lavender macron, manzana cake, choux vanilla raspberry, pina colada glass, chocolate hazelnut composition and chocolate mint moon pie. Needless to say, there was absolutely no nutritional chart posted. How lovely to dessert without guilt!

Joe Sage, Alexis Sage and Gillian Breidenbach

Joe Sage, Alexis Sage and Gillian Breidenbach

The guests eventually took their places for the live auction. There were designated chairs for hopefully big spenders. For the rest, it was standing and gawking as the paddles rose. Within that fray of non-seaters was automotive-type Joe Sage, who was with his SMU daughter Alexis and gal pal Gillian Breidenbach. The car wheeler-dealer was such a tease. As certain items came up for bid that caught Alexis’ eye, his paddle rose but it wasn’t the final one up.

Andrew McVinish

Andrew McVinish

Alas, auctioneer Christie’s Aussie auctioneer Andrew McVinish didn’t get off to a shiny start. One person grumbled that he “sorta” insulted the locals. Ah, heck! Australians are just an ocean away from being Yanks! He was just joshing.

Other priceless moments were former TACA RBC Wealth Management Custom Auction Co-Chairs Kit and Kemp Sawers modeling the Chanel watches.

Instead it seems that a relatively new member of the TACA staff who was to coordinate the event and the auction packages, had merrily led all to believe that everything was copacetic in the months leading up to the big fundraiser. Less than three weeks before the auction, it was learned that despite her assurances, some of the items just didn’t exist. Adding to the brouhaha, the outside event producer hadn’t even been hired after all.

When confronted, she said she was very sorry but it was true.

TACA execs were sorry, too, as they handed her a pink slip, showed her the door and went into uber overdrive to pull the auction and event together.

Thanks to TACA’s reputation, a proven staff and loyal board/supporters, the event came off with lots of smiles and money for the performing arts.

Following Friday night’s TACA RBC Wealth Management Custom Auction and the James Beard Foundation’s Taste America: Dallas, people hardly had time to grab a couple of hours of sleep. Then they had to rise and shine, have a steaming cup of latte and head off to Saturday, September 27’s demands.

DCAC League’s Bingo Luncheon

For those who were suffering from cabin fever due to power outages, there was the Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center’s League 13th Annual Bingo Luncheon at Belo Mansion. Proceed from the event help “fund the Family Advocacy, Forensic Interview, Therapy and Education programs at DCAC, as well as the Clothes Closet.”

Mission Ole

Later in the evening the beautiful peeps heard the call of the Trinity River Mission’s Mission Ole. Unlike years before when the event took place in private homes like Laurie Sands Harrison’s. But Co-Chairs LeeAnne Locken and D’Andra Simmons Lock decided to shift the party venue to One Art Plaza. Thanks to a spectacular night with stars and strings of lights overhead, it was a perfect night to party out in the driveway.

The occasion was the Pegasus Ball benefiting the Autism Treatment Center with a record amount of money being raised. The black-tie gala was the final event of the three-day Roundup for Autism that started Thursday in Fort Worth. As Roundup Founder Bobby Norris explained, “Each day, there are more and more families seeking answer, searching for experienced and dedicated therapists to provide early-intervention services and life-long programs that will be there for years to come.”

Founded in 1976, “ATC just purchased its 22nd community-based group home and is currently expanding its Dallas Therapy Clinic. As a parent of an adult daughter with autism and as a board member of ATC, I am proud of our many accomplishments.”

But there was an “Oops!” that came to light at the reception. A cute chocolate Labrador puppy was on a leash being walked around the area being introduced to guests. When contacted, organizers swore that neither the pup nor a quarter horse corralled outside the Regency Ballroom was being auctioned off. However, they did admit that the Lab had been given a “very good home” in exchange for a donation. That was the “Oops!” — that sticky Dallas ordinance that prohibits the use of animals for any form of nonprofit fundraising.

Upon learning of the ordinance, Autism Treatment Center’s Development Director Neil Massey responded, “This has been a good teaching moment for us — to do more due diligence and make sure that what we’re doing isn’t just because we’ve seen others do it, but to make sure we comply with ordinances.” He then added that they would make a donation to a rescue organization.

The red carpet extended from Flora to the Winspear Opera House front door on Friday, October 24. Along the way were mini-stages for one-of-a-kind creations by area designers. Each represented a Dallas Opera production (Elizabeth Anyaa — “LA Wally”, Michael Faircloth — “Iolanta”, Abi Ferrin — “Salome”, Khahn Nguyen — “La Boheme”, Edo Popken — “Everest” and Nicolas Villalba — “The Marriage Of Figaro”) that would take place during the 2014-2015 season.

Just the day before the designer’s outfits had been showcased on the runway in the Winspear lobby for First Sight luncheon and fashion show of the Roberto Cavalli collection.

But on this evening when “The Marriage of Figaro” was to officially open the DO’s season, Larry Leathers’ staging with models’ and guests’ gowns and jewelry glammed up the First Night walkway so much that passersby took cell phone photos.

After a seated dinner chaired by Nancy D. Nasher and David J. Haemisegger in a tent adjoining the Winspear, the crowd attended the opera with music director Emmanuel Villaume at the helm.

Just a block away, the opera was being simulcast in Klyde Warren Park for a record-breaking crowd of 7,000.

Afterwards, the black-tie guests let their hair down for an after party back in the tent chaired by Jenifer Strauss and Robert Weatherly with Lucy Wrubel in charge of the music.

Christie Carter (File photo)

The Crystal Charity Ball ladies have still three weeks before their mega-fundraiser on Saturday, December 6, and they’re already planning for CCB 2016. Yup, you read that right — two years from now! Word just arrived that Christie Carter has been tapped to head up the 2016 team of 100 women to raise loads and loads of money for nonprofits benefiting area children.

A member of CCB since 2006, Christie’s resume sounds like she could head up a Fortune 500. She’s been president of the Junior League of Dallas, Genesis Women’s Shelter and Dallas CASA Children’s Council. In addition to serving on the board of The Senior Source and Dallas Child and Family Guidance Center, she has served as underwriting chair for the Salvation Army Luncheon, the Senior Source and the CASA Capital Campaign and underwriting co-chair for 2013 Celebrating Women.

Whew! That’s just a smidgen of her leadership within the fundraising community. Looks like the tradition of amazing leadership is safely in place for CCB.

Congrats to CCB, Christie and the children of Dallas.

So, the black tie seated dinner for a mere 250+ proved to exceed the expectations of those, both near and far, who had flown in from Abu Dhabi, New Orleans, Chicago, California and Singapore.

Oh, the gorgeous crowd, the OMG food and the splendor “WOW!” factor came together for a legendary event — to celebrate the meeting of Brian Bolke and Faisal Halum that evolved into their August nuptials. Instead of gifts, they requested donations for the art and Two by Two for AIDs. But it was the marvelous touches of the couple that reminded many of their own splendiferous meeting resulting in a lifelong relationship.

Brian Bolke And Faisal Halum Celebrate The Past, The Present And The Future With Family, Friends And “Beautiful”

The towering, white geodesic dome outside the Rachofsky House, that appears annually, has become synonymous with the Two by Two fundraiser for the Dallas Museum of Art and amfAR. But this year it continued to stand in place for days after the big moneymaker.

There was a good reason. It was the scene for still another fundraiser, so to speak. In celebration of their meeting 10 years ago to the day, Dallas retailing impresario of good taste Brian Bolke and residential Realtor of luxurious properties Faisal Halum had more than 250 of their family and friends in for an evening for a couple of very personal reasons. The twosome were also “announcing” their August 18th marriage in Provincetown, Massachusetts. As if any announcement were needed, since everyone knew of the duo’s nuptials.

And because luxury experts Brian and Faisal were certainly in no need of kitchen appliances or linens, they requested that “in lieu of gifts, we ask that you consider a donation to Two by Two for AIDs and art.”

But don’t go thinking that it was simple cocktail affair. It was memory maker of a black-tie, seated dinner that had guests coming from as far away as Chicago, California, Singapore and Abu Dabhi. And it was strictly a family and close friends’ gathering. The Bolke clan included Brian’s father Don Bolke, uncle Ed Bolke, brother Darryl Bolke (a former Los Angeles policeman who now trains the military in the use of firearms and was at one time a security guard for Will Smith), niece Ashlynn Bolke and stepmom Nancy Bolke, who said, “You know that old saying, ‘If you work hard you can live the American dream.’? Well, Brian’s living the American dream.”

Sahar Halum

Sahar Halum

Faisal’s family also was well-represented with his sister Amna Halum and niece Nadia Halum in from New Orleans and cousin Sahar Halum in from California plus his niece Munda from Abu Dhabi. Nephew Fuad Shatara and his wife Lorena, whose fabulous wedding in Spain Brian and Faisal attended, were on hand to return the favor.

Despite the tent having been the scene of the previous Two by Two and Todd Fiscus’ way-over-the-top 10-year celebration of his company just days before, event producer Todd managed to create still another wonderland extravaganza with hundreds and hundreds of lights and white orchids. The front of the tent was for the cocktail hour, with DJ Lucy Wrubel in an OMG multi-colored, sequined blouse (“Brian picked it out!”) reading “We Will Win” holding court on half of a circular stage. Against the back wall of the tent, mammoth “windows” were projected making the scene appear to be a palace courtyard.

As guests entered the dome, they discovered their table assignments on a side table, couch seatings, oversized bars, a longer-than-forever table with flutes of champagne and a non-stop array of yummies reflecting Brian’s and Faisal’s travels (Greece — goat cheese and leek spanakopita “cigars” with dried currants; Dallas — BBQ smoked beef tenderloin, honey-glazed cornbread and celery root slaw; New Orleans — fried Gulf oyster on the half shell). The martini glasses were so chilled that Niven Morgan apologized for spilling his.

Speaking of a chill, many of the gals decided to keep their furs near and dear (Brooke Hortenstine, Elaine Agather, Missy Rogers, Jacqueline Anderson, Capera Ryan and Erin Mathews). Others took it all in stride showing bare shoulders, arms, backs and even midriffs (Vinita Schroeder, Jennifer Eagle, Shelle Sills, Piper Wyatt, Tracy Madans, Jan Showers and Nancy Rogers, who was dazzling in red and ice — diamond and ruby earrings and necklace). A couple, like Anna-Sophia van Zweden and Tina Craig, flirted with black lace insets. There was even a contingent that opted for short sparkly cocktail dresses (Muffin Lemak and Heidi Wehring). Still others came prepared for a nip in the air and were covered shoulders to stilettos, like Chicago first lady of retailing Ikram Goldman, Sue Gragg and Susan Kaminski.

The fellows, on the other hand, stayed tried and true to black tie. Brian in Tom Ford and Faisal in black sequined Saint Laurent. Okay, so a couple of the gents dressed down their formal look with sneakers, and Howard Rachofsky sported an electric blue jacket. But, hey, it’s a guy thing.

This crowd was so gorgeous that instead of selfies being snapped, it was “swell-fies”.

At 8:30 the reception area was filled to the brim with the beautiful people and the signal was given that it was dinner time. Then guests made their way to the other side of the tent, with its tables covered in silver clothes, towering glass cylinder vases filled with white orchids, and personalized books containing the menu, photos of Brian and Faisal, and thank yous for those who had been part of the evening’s behind-the-scenes efforts. On the wall, a video of clips from “Dynasty” was shown on the wall. Once seated, the glamorous guests looked even more dazzling thanks to the overhead lighting, candles on the table and crystal.

At this point the Dallas String Quartet performed on the stage facing the diners.

Faisal Halum

A few minutes later Faisal took the stage. Despite being a bit nervous, he told the guests that the evening was indeed to celebrate their marriage and to express their gratitude — “You have shaped our success as a couple.” Among those he thanked were Ray Hom and Kent Grogin, who had flown in from Singapore, and “persuaded me to fly to New Orleans” 10 years ago. It was in New Orleans to celebrate Halloween where he and Brian met. Regarding their recent marriage, he said, “It really taught us that marriage is for everyone. Same-sex marriage is now legal and recognized in 32 states and, maybe someday, Texas will be one of those states.” At that moment, a slide was shown on the dome’s wall reading, “Vote Wendy Davis for Governor.” Faisal added, “We’re not trying to tell you who to vote for.” Laughter rippled through the group. It was followed by a video of the Bolke-Halum wedding ending with Shannon Johnson saying, “I now pronounce you, husband and husband.”

Matching the beautiful surroundings, the dinner’s courses were perfection thanks to catering czarina Cassandra. Keeping with Brian’s and Faisal travel theme, Cindy and Howard Rachofsky arranged to start off the supper with small mountains of American sturgeon caviar along with crème fraiche, quail eggs, chives and butter brioche a la New York and Napa Valley wine and champagne.

This was followed by the first course, Southern California — baby Romaine Caesar salad “box” with picked red onions, oven dried tomatoes and crisp Parmesan lid. Next was the second course, Provincetown, of lobster ravioli, roasted butternut squash truffle cream, chive oil and lobster cracker. The main entrée of the Middle East was black mission fig and goat cheese, crusted lamb chops with baby squash, zucchini, marble potatoes and carrots with pomegranate demi. Sweet trays a la Turkey were gold macaroons, dried dates and baklava. The desserts finished the world tour of cuisine with Paris (salted caramel and pots de crème), Italy (tiramisu) and Mexico (tres leches cake).

Brian Bolke

Brian Bolke

Just past 10:30, Brian stood on stage as Faisal stood tableside surrounded by his relatives. In Arabic Brian welcomed the Halum family. He thanked the numerous people, who had been involved with their relationship and the celebration. One especially poignant moment came when he addressed Meredith Musselman and her fiancée and recalled that it was three and a half years ago that her mother/his Forty Five Ten partner, Shelly Musselman, had died. He then told the group that “Faisal’s and my mother were born on the same day…1939.”

Brian Bolke, Gabby Porter and Faisal Halum

Brian Bolke, Gabby Porter and Faisal Halum

Turning his eyes to Faisal, Brian said, “Faisal, I have a gift for you; not a Rolex, it’s our song.” It was the song — “Beautiful” — that 10 years ago, Brian and Faisal heard in New Orleans sung before 3,000 people by a 16-year-old girl, Gabrielle “Gabby” Porter. A shocked Faisal watched as Brian left the stage and was replaced by Gabby, who sang their song.

It was indeed a beautiful night that was 10 years in the making and shared with those who appreciated and applauded their happiness.
