Back in the 1980s, Dorothy and Lawrence Herkimer were recipients of the Texas Discovery Garden‘s Flora Award for their “commitment to community service, education and the advancement of the environment and quality of life.”

Now, nearly four decades later, the Flora Award is once again celebrating a member of the Herkimer family.
2022 Flora Award Chair Cara French has just revealed that the recipient of this year’s award will be Dorothy’s and Lawrence’s daughter Marilyn Weber.
According to Cara, “Marilyn’s designation as this year’s honoree is particularly poignant as her parents, Dorothy and Lawrence Herkimer, were Flora Award recipients in the mid-1980s. She has continued her parents’ passion for the support of beautification and enrichment of public and private gardens throughout the city of Dallas including the Dallas Arboretum, Fair Park and the SMU campus, to name a few.”
Marilyn will be honored at a black-tie dinner on Thursday, November 10, at Texas Discovery Gardens in Fair Park. Funds raised from the event will benefit the Gardens, which is “the second-oldest botanical institution in Texas and the first in Dallas to offer free unique educational programs to youth from all socioeconomic backgrounds.”
In addition to the Herkimers, other Flora Award recipients have included Allie Beth and Pierce Allman, Ruth Sharp Altshuler, Marilyn Augur, Sis and Plack Carr, Rita Clements, Mary Anne Sammons Cree, Barbara Hunt Crow, Louise Griffeth, Nancy Hamon, Margaret Hill, Caroline Rose Hunt, Juanita and Henry S. Miller Jr., Raymond Nasher, Jan Pickens, Peggy and Carl Sewell and Dee and Charles Wyly.
